The Best Skincare Routine

The best skincare routine for all skin types

When it comes to forming good skincare habits, a daily routine can majorly boost your chances of seeing real results. But what should my skincare routine be? Skincare is very personal and often confusing (we’ve all heard of 12-step skincare routines!). Which is why we worked with dermatologists to create clean and safe formulas that not only keep skincare simple but work for all skin types, even the most sensitive. How? By infusing them with skin-loving, nourishing and reparative ingredients for multitasking effects. But wait… there’s more! Thanks to our latest launch - Wash Away One-Step Cleanser - creating a simple and complete skincare routine using our formulas is now easier than ever. MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE STEP 1: Cleanse + nourish with Wash Away Gentle on skin, tough on build up! This single-cleanse formula effortlessly washes away stubborn makeup, sunscreen and impurities. Packed with nourishing ingredients, such as powerful antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5, this lightly-exfoliating and low-foam cleanser leaves skin feeling refreshingly clean, but never stripped or tight. It also leaves skin with the perfect clean and clear foundation for the rest of your routine to work more deeply and effectively. STEP 2: Restore + nourish eyes with MD Restore Eye Gel After cleansing, your next step is to give your eyes some love. A quick dab’ll do ya with our eye gel. Packed with an incredible 5 nourishing peptides plus caffeine and antioxidants, it helps reduce signs of sun damage while giving skin a firmer, more elastic appearance. It also continues to work throughout the day, releasing mega moisture, and niacinamide that keep working to reduce the appearance of unwanted baggage. STEP 3: Moisturize + nourish with Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30 We like to keep things simple. That’s why we combined a moisturizer and SPF in one! Its soothing, lightweight formula will give your skin a mega dose of hydration, antioxidants, restoring and calming ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, chamomile, caffeine and olive oils) and broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection for a dewy, youthful glow. Plus, this formula goes on clear and leaves no white cast, perfect for all skin tones. It's a solid makeup primer, or great to wear on its own as it leaves skin with a natural healthy glow. STEP 4: Protect + nourish with Mineral Tinted Creme SPF 30 This step is optional in the morning, thanks to our moisturizer with SPF. But because its tinted formula leaves a matte, filter-like finish on your skin, it’s great as a makeup primer or even on its own for that no-makeup look. Just like all our formulas, this multitasker comes infused with skin-loving ingredients, such as antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea, cranberry fruit and pomegranate extract. We recommend keeping this most-loved tinted formula on hand throughout the day for easy reapplication (even works over makeup!).   NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE STEP 1: Cleanse + nourish with Wash Away Always start your evening routine by washing away the day. Besides makeup and sunscreen, our skin gets exposed to dirt, grime, pollution, free radicals and whatever else is in the air. If left unwashed, it can leave skin looking aged, tired, dull and lackluster. Wash Away quickly and easily removes all of this build up in a single step for skin that’s more receptive to the rest of your evening routine. STEP 2: Restore + nourish eyes with MD Restore Eye Gel Just as you did in your morning routine, follow your cleanse with our ultra-soothing and nourishing eye gel for skin that looks brighter and younger, and feels firmer and more elastic. This is especially essential after a day in the sun to help reduce any sun damage. Our Eye gel is fragrance free, which can be important for anyone with fragrance sensitivity. STEP 3: Moisturize + nourish skin with MD Revitalize Retinol Serum Last step before you catch some Zzz’s! At night, our skin switches into repair mode to recover from the day. Which makes it the perfect time to use our nighttime serum with encapsulated + stabilized retinol. This lightweight formula helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and pores while you sleep for skin that looks brighter, youthful and radiant in the morning. Worried about your skin’s sensitivity to retinol? Unlike traditional formulas, our encapsulated retinol is able to delicately move its way deeper into the skin before it's activated. This helps to avoid the side effects of dryness, peeling, and irritation that you may get from traditional retinols.  For more information on our products' formulas and skin-loving ingredients, check out this blog.

The science behind Wash Away’s super-clean feel

The science behind Wash Away’s super-clean feel

We always knew that one day we’d create a face cleanser to complete our collection. But we didn’t want to add yet another face wash to an already oversaturated market just to say we did it. We wanted to go deeper (literally!) without complicating your skincare routine. Given our commitment to skin health and sun protection, it only made sense for us to formulate a cleanser that could effectively remove impurities AND sunscreen. But rather than going the typical route of creating an oil-based cleanser to remove sunscreen and a water-based cleanser to clear the rest, we thought… why not combine them into one? So we did! The result is a cleanser that’s tough enough to remove makeup, impurities, and sunscreen (even mineral sunscreen!) without stripping your skin or messing with its PH. It’s also fragrance- and irritant-free, making it the ideal cleanser for even the most sensitive skin types. Ready to meet your new cleanser? Let’s dive in! How does Wash Away’s “one step” formula work? What makes this cleanser truly amazing is its ability to wash away mineral sunscreen with ease, and without double cleansing. When you apply a mineral sunscreen, two things happen: First, its main protective ingredients, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, settle on top of the skin to protect your skin from damaging UV rays. Then, a typically silicone-based (aka, oil), water-resistant barrier sits on top of those ingredients, making sure the sunscreen does not run when you’re sweating or swimming. Necessary for protecting your skin… but a pain to try and wash off later, especially if your cleanser is solely water-based (because, as we all know, oil and water don’t play well together!). In order to truly clean your skin, you need to first be able to break down the water-resistant barrier, then you can get to the zinc, titanium dioxide and grime underneath. That’s where Wash Away comes in! Here’s how it works: First, gentle, sulfate-free surfactants (cleansing agents) break down the water-resistant barrier. From there, the oils - grape seed and argan oil - are no longer obstructed from going in and loosening up any zinc, Titanium Dioxide, dirt, makeup (even mascara!) and other impurities your skin picked up over the day, for ease of washing off. While you wash, your skin is also soaking in major goodness. Like all MDSolarSciences formulas, Wash Away also pampers and nourishes your skin as it cleanses. Light Exfoliation This low-foam formula contains pineapple and apple extracts, which provide very mild, surface-level exfoliation to help remove any dead skin or trapped minerals. Fruit-based Antioxidants Pomegranate extract, green tea extract, and grape seed oil all help in neutralizing any damaging and dulling free radicals your skin picks up from the sun. Grape seed oil also provides the highest level of linoleic acid from a fruit - aka, major anti-aging benefits such as an increase in ceramides. Moisturizing AND Hydrating Agents Both of these are required to keep skin plump, free of fine lines and rosy! The hydrating agents - Panthenol (Pro Vitamin B5), Glycerin, Hyaluronic acid - attract and hold water to the skin, while the moisturizing agents - Argan oil, Squalane, Grape seed oil - leave a thin “barrier” that prevents water from evaporating. So skin stays hydrated and plump all day! How to add Wash Away to your regular routine Because of its super gentle, non-irritating formula, this cleanser can be used twice a day to wash away your day… and night! A.M. SPF 101: The right way to apply sunscreen in 4 critical steps

SPF 101: The right way to apply sunscreen in 4 critical steps

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… and again until the end of time: There’s no part of your daily skincare routine more important than sunscreen. Incorporating any kind of protection into your routine - whether it’s a dedicated SPF or a multitasking formula - can save you loads of trouble down the line (aka, burns, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, melanoma). But as with most things, there is a wrong way and a right way to apply sunscreen. The wrong way? Applying it like you would make up - lightly, selectively, only on your face, as if it’s a highlighter (if you know, you know). The right way? We’re going to break it all down for you!  Here’s our ultimate guide to applying sunscreen the right way, in 4 critical steps.  Step 1: Choose the right sunscreen First things first, make sure you’re using a broad-spectrum formula with at least SPF 30. This ensures you’re protected from both UVA and UVB rays.  Next, decide if you want a dedicated SPF or a multitasking formula. We get a lot of questions about whether or not using a multitasker makes the SPF less effective. The answer? Nope! As long as it has at least SPF 30, you’re good. And as long as you apply enough of it (more on that later). It can save you a couple of steps in your routine.  We particularly like using a multitasking daily moisturizer, like our Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30. Its ultra-hydrating formula comes packed with antioxidants and nutrients that help reduce signs of UV-induced damage. It also helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, for a dewy, youthful glow from AM to PM. We suggest using it under your makeup as a primer! Step 2: When to apply Our golden rule: Always apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. This is especially true for chemical formulas, which require at least 15 minutes to absorb into the skin and become effective.  SPF should also always be the last step in your skincare routine, unless, again, you’re using a chemical formula. This is because products like moisturizers can act as a barrier to chemical sunscreen, causing it to become ineffective.  Step 3: Make sure you’re applying enough + applying everywhere According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people only apply 25-50% of the amount of sunscreen recommended. In order to ensure you’re covering every inch of skin that needs it, follow these two rules: For your face, follow the 2-finger rule: Cover the length of two fingers with sunscreen, then apply for optimal coverage. For your body, follow the shot glass rule: For maximum protection, your body needs 1.5 oz of sunscreen, which is the exact amount of a shot glass. Make sure to really rub it into and all over your skin to ensure you’re covering every inch. And don’t forget those hard-to-reach and forgotten spots, including your hairline, under eyes, top and back of ears, neck, jaw and lips. We love to use our Solar Stick SPF 40 or Tinted Solar Stick SPF 40 for this. Its easy-to-grip design and rounded top makes reaching these spots effortless.  Just remember, if it feels excessive, you’re doing it right!  Step 4: Reapply, reapply, reapply We can’t stress this one enough. Make sure to read the back of any sunscreen bottles you use to know how often you have to reapply. For most sunscreens, it’s around the 2 hour mark, especially if you’re spending the day outside, swimming or sweating. Even if they’re water-resistant for up to 80 minutes like most of our formulas, you still need to reapply. Wearing makeup? No problem! Our formulas work either under or on top of your makeup without messing up your look or leaving a white cast. Check out our tinted formulas for reapplication that also provides a matte, glowing finish and blurs imperfections like an Insta filter!  ----  When it comes to sun care, there’s literally no such thing as being overly-cautious or over-applying!

Easiest 3-step skincare routine for men

Easiest 3-step skincare routine for men

Okay gentlemen, it’s time to talk about your daily skincare routine! Despite the 12-step routines you may have witnessed your sister/mom/girlfriend perform, taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Especially if you use multitasking, feel-good formulas, like MDSolarSciences, that not only help you combine essential steps but feel incredible on your skin. The truth is, creating your own skincare routine isn’t just about having good skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, men are much more likely to develop melanoma than women - a discrepancy that continues to increase as they age. The main reason being? Women are more likely to have a skincare routine and also use makeup and other cosmetics that double as an SPF. The good news is we’ve got you covered with expert advice! Check out this dermatologist-recommended super simple 3-step skincare routine for men. Today, dermatologist Dr. Chris Tomassian is sharing his super simple 3-step skincare routine for men:     Check out what Dr. Tomassian recommends below! STEP 1: CLEANSE 1-2 times a day Dirt, germs, pollution, excess oil, dead skin cells - a lot builds up on your face throughout the day. If left unwashed, it can clog your pores, resulting in breakouts. Cleansing with a gentle face wash 1-2 times a day helps keep your skin clean and fresh for a healthier, more youthful appearance for longer. STEP 2: MOISTURIZE 1-2 times a day Moisturizing your face regularly is essential to ensure the skin stays soft, smooth and hydrated. Even better? Choosing a multitasking moisturizer that comes with added benefits and feels silky-smooth on the skin. Here are a few of our favorites: AM Moisturizer: Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30 Lightweight, ultra-hydrating and nourishing with zero white cast, this dermatologist-developed moisturizer also provides broad-spectrum protection and powerful antioxidants to help keep skin safe from the sun. PM Moisturizer: Evening Retinol Serum This lightweight moisturizing serum works overnight to help smooth, tone and revitalize skin. Encapsulated retinol (0.75%) helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and pores, while calming ingredients (such as chamomile, seaweed extract, caffeine, aloe and niacinamide) brighten for a radiant, fresh-faced finish. STEP 3: PROTECT Throughout the day, every 2 hours when in the sun Whether you’re spending the day inside or out, your skin ALWAYS needs protection from the sun. This will help reduce your chances of developing melanoma, plus save your skin from premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Here are a few of our favorite suncare formulas for protecting and reapplying throughout the day… so creamy and soft, they don’t even feel like SPF! Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30   The ultimate multitasker, this lightweight mineral formula blends effortlessly into skin, evens out tone and provides a matte finish. Broad-spectrum protection, powerful antioxidants and nourishing ingredients keep skin protected and healthy-looking. Solar Stick SPF 40 Your essential on-the-go SPF! Convenient and portable, this non-whitening formula glides on flawlessly and delivers powerful mineral protection that’s lightweight, oil-free and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Check out our Tinted Solar Stick SPF 40 for broad-spectrum protection that also doubles as a matte finish that blurs imperfections. Quick Dry Body Spray SPF 40 This non-greasy, fast-drying formula with a 360-degree continuous spray makes full-body application (and reapplication!) quick and easy. Oil-free and water-resistant, it’s ideal for an active lifestyle or long days spent in the sun. Thank you for reading! Love the Skin You’re in With Dr. Hayag

Love the Skin You’re in With Dr. Hayag

When it comes to loving the skin you're in, Dr. Marie Hayag has the magic touch. She knows that when you look good, you feel good. And at her medical and cosmetic dermatologist practice in the Upper East Side of New York City, she’s all about achieving natural results while reaching her patients’ goals. That’s why she stays up-to-date on all the latest cutting-edge procedures so her patients always receive the best care for their skin needs. If you’re all about natural results, aging gracefully, and boosting self-confidence, Dr. Marie’s got you covered. We recently caught up with her to ask some of our most burning skincare questions. Check out her top tips on healthy habits, skincare routines, the best and safest treatments and more! What do you love about your job? I love that I can practice both medical and cosmetic dermatology. If you could make your patients pick up one skincare habit, what would it be? Wear daily sunscreen and a retinoid every day. And if you could make them drop one skincare habit or misconception, what would it be? People think they need the sun to get their Vitamin D, but it is much safer and easier to take a Vitamin D supplement. What are the best skincare routines (or most important things to do) for the main life stages: 20s, 30-40s, 50+? Your 20s are the time to set the foundation for good skincare habits If you have dry skin, use a milky cleanser and, if your skin is on the oilier side, opt for a gel cleanser. Use a moisturizer even if you have oily skin (an oil-free moisturizer is a good option). The most important part of your routine is to apply sunscreen everyday all over the face and neck (this part of your skincare regimen is vital across all age groups). You can also begin to use a prescription retinoid or over-the-counter retinol, which helps stimulate collagen production, treats acne, and reduces fine lines. During your 30-40s, your skin begins to lose collagen more and more rapidly You’ll begin to notice fine lines in your 30s that will deepen over time. Using a retinoid or retinol product is more of a must than optional. It’s also beneficial to incorporate antioxidants into your routine, as they help provide protection against UV damage. A Vitamin C serum is a good option. Additionally, most women experience perimenopause in their 40s, which causes skin to become drier. Use creamy, gentle cleansers, and make sure to use a richer moisturizer. Some good ingredients to look for in a moisturizer include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and niacinamide. In your 50s and beyond, skin can feel quite dry Incorporate a hyaluronic acid serum into your routine. Keep using moisturizing ingredients, and an antioxidant serum. You can also consider adding products that contain active peptides to help encourage collagen production. Tell us about the latest treatment or procedures you find invaluable. Laser Hair Removal Laser hair removal is such an invaluable treatment because it provides a permanent approach to hair removal. It removes the need for constantly plucking, waxing, and shaving and all the problems that come along with those methods of hair removal like irritation or in-grown hairs.  Botox Injections Botox injections are a great way to treat and prevent wrinkles. Additionally, they’re typically painless, have minimal side effects, and results appear fairly quickly. Qwo for treatment of cellulite Qwo is currently the only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of cellulite. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that connect the skin to the muscle. Over time the bands can thicken, creating tension and a dimpling effect on the skin, a.k.a. cellulite. Qwo injections break down the bands, leaving skin smooth. This is an innovative treatment that effectively addresses the underlying cause of cellulite. Body Contouring treatments Body contouring treatments like Coolsculpt and Emsculpt are great ways to keep you looking your best. Coolsculpt uses controlled cooling to freeze and kill unwanted fat cells for a more sculpted look. Emsculpt also provides a more sculpted look using electromagnetic energy to induce muscle contractions to ultimately improve the strength and tone of your muscles. How often and at what age should someone start seeing a Dermatologist? Starting in your 20s, I recommend seeing a dermatologist at least once a year, even if you don’t have specific skin concerns. A total body skin exam can help detect skin cancers and any other skin concerns. If you’ve had skin cancer in the past, have a close relative that has had skin cancer, or have a mole or growth that appears to be suspicious, you may have to see a dermatologist more frequently. If you have a family history of skin cancer or melanoma, I recommend seeing a dermatologist for a total body skin exam during childhood. The earlier one starts a good habit like this the better in the long run.   You can follow Dr. Hayag on Instagram or check out her website if you are in the New York area.

Sun Care 101: <br> Can babies wear sunscreen?

Sun Care 101: Can babies wear sunscreen?

When it comes to protecting our kids from anything and everything, there’s nothing we wouldn’t do. From child-proofing every corner of the house to researching the safest car seat ever invented. But have you considered sun protection? When it comes to babies and young kids, sun care is not only essential, but different depending on their age. If you find yourself wondering “can babies wear sunscreen?” or “what kind of sunscreen should I use?”, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve got you covered with 6 top dermatologist-recommended tips for keeping your little ones safe and protected. WHEN CAN BABIES USE SUNSCREEN? For babies less than 6 months, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends no sun exposure at all. This is because their skin is still developing the melanin needed to protect itself and is therefore extra sensitive. If you plan to be outside, the best safeguards against the sun are setting up a shade structure or dressing them in sun-protective clothing. For babies and kids over 6 months, it’s recommended to wear SPF 15 on a daily basis and SPF 30 when spending time outdoors. Make sure to impress the importance of reapplying every 2 hours, especially when swimming. Most importantly, make sure you’re choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen for maximum protection from both UVA and UVB rays! USE SPF CLOTHING WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS The more skin you can cover with clothing the better! Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, long sleeves, full-body swimsuits, and rash guards with UPF are the best. Any skin that’s left exposed should be covered by shade and/or sunscreen.  USE A SUNSCREEN THAT IS KID-SAFE AND KID-APPROVED We all remember the days when our parents would roughly slather on that thick, unspreadable sunscreen that felt greasy all over. Thankfully, those days are gone! Today’s kid sunscreens are much more advanced with creamy formulas that feel good, spread easily, are kid-safe and good for the environment. For you, the parent, choosing a kid-safe sunscreen means it has broad-spectrum protection, at least SPF 30, a mineral formula that won’t sting their eyes, and is safe for all skin types - even the most sensitive, acne- or rosacea-prone skin. For your kids, that means a sunscreen that has no sticky icky feel, unpleasant sunscreen smell or white cast, and feels creamy and good on the skin. Our favorite is, of course, KidCreme. Let’s see how it fares: SPF 50 Safe for all skin types Unscented Creamy, silky-smooth feel that’s easy to apply Made with non-Nano Zinc oxide for effortless blending and no white cast Bonus! It’s also cruelty-free and reef-safe, which means it’s made without damaging ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate Say it with us: No more “sunscream” days! Check out this blog on more tips for choosing the right sunscreen for kids. LET THEM GET INVOLVED IN SUN PROTECTION Like we said, good habits start young! Once they’re old enough, let them get involved in their own sun protection and apply it themselves. If using a mineral sunscreen, make sure they shake well before applying. If using a chemical sunscreen, make sure they apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure so it has enough time to absorb into the skin. To learn more about the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens, check out this blog. For an easy application that leaves no mess and is kid-safe, we love KidStick. Gentle, unscented and water-resistant, this grab-and-go stick glides on smoothly, quickly and easily, and has broad-spectrum protection. WHEN IN A RUSH, USE A SPRAY If you’re really crunched for time, it’s better to use any sunscreen than no sunscreen at all. In these cases, we recommend using a spray. Just beware that these don’t often apply evenly and may require you to rub them in for better protection. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS CHOOSE WATER-RESISTANT This is key to avoiding painful sunburns for your kids, especially if they’re swimming or sweating for long-periods of time outside. Both our KidCreme and KidStick are water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Teaching your kids healthy sun protection habits early is not only a good idea, but beneficial in the long run. Less painful sunburns as a kid and as they grow up means less chance of dealing with premature skin-aging and skin cancer later in life. Thankfully, both our kid sunscreens are top rated by the Environmental Working Group with a 1 rating, which means they provide the highest level of protection for your little ones for fun in the sun all summer long!

Sun Safety Tips for Spring and Summer

Sun Safety Tips for Spring and Summer

Spring Break! The unofficial start of fun in the sun. Finally, fresh air, hikes, time near or on the water. Shedding heavy clothes in exchange for shorts and sunglasses and the feel of the sun on your skin. And, while we all want to add a little glow to our pasty post-Winter complexion, sun safety needs to be the priority. With the excitement of sun-soaked days, this can be overlooked. SPF, specifically Broad Spectrum, should be a part of your daily regimen, just like brushing your teeth. Respect Your Skin. Those first few days that we start spending extended periods of time outside is when our skin is most sensitive. Think about it, we’ve been covered up for months with long sleeves, hoods and masks. If you plan on organizing a family picnic, days at the beach or are flying off on a long-awaited vacation, remember to include SPF in those plans. Start with a higher SPF like MDSolarSciences™ Mineral Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 50, or Mineral Moisture Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen (great for dry skin!) These feel-good formulas deliver lightweight, silky-smooth texture that keep face and body moisturized and protected. Gentle enough for the most sensitive skin and suitable for kids 6 months and older. Pack one of these along with your hat and rash guard. Fake It, Don’t Bake It.  While many love the look of tanned skin, there are better ways to get that sun-kissed look.  Dr. Christopher Tomassian, a Kansas City dermatologist, with a passion for cosmetic and aesthetic dermatology, is often asked “can you tan with sunscreen on?” His reply?  “Laying out in the sun for the purpose of tanning is not recommended. At the end of the day, tanned skin is damaged skin. However, that does not mean you should not enjoy outdoor activities.” Dr. Tomassian, who loves to educate his clients via social media (Instagram/TikTok: @dr.tomassian) recommends wearing at least SPF 30 and reapplying every two hours. Set a timer on your phone or watch to remind yourself.  He also suggests to: “Go for a glow instead, I recommend using a tinted sunscreen to achieve that sun-kissed look.” MDSolarSciences™ Mineral Tinted Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is dermatologist-approved and sweat-resistant. The formula is satiny-smooth, glides on and leaves an instant healthy-looking glow on skin.  Other Sunscreen Tips! Finally, look for sunscreens that contain natural antioxidants, like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, fruit extracts and Zinc Oxide. Read packages to see if they feature cruelty-free and reef safe logos, as well as the coveted seal from the Skin Cancer Foundation. Above all, enjoy the beautiful weather, have fun and stay sun safe! To read more about our Reef Safe Sunscreens and formulas, check out this blog.
