Sunscreen for Athletes

At MDSolarSciences, we advise athletes to consider several factors before selecting a
suitable sunscreen.

As an athlete, you tend to spend more time in the sun than those us who lead less
active lifestyles. Some common sports that entail prolonged sun exposure include
baseball, soccer, football, volleyball, hiking, skiing, snowboarding and so forth.
Since SPF is measured on a time-dependent calculation—the time it takes your skin
to redden when in the sun without wearing sunscreen compared to the time it takes
your skin to redden while wearing sunscreen, Our Scientific Advisory Committee
suggests athletes should choose a UVA/UVB broad spectrum mineral sunscreen
with relatively high SPF. Universally, everyone should choose a sunscreen with an
SPF of at least 30. Our recommended options for athletes: SPF 40 or SPF 50+ .

For example, applying SPF 50+ will allow a soccer player whose skin takes 5
minutes to turn red sans sunscreen to spend 50 times as long in the sun before his
skin begins to redden. In this case, the soccer player could spend about four hours
and 15 minutes in the sun before developing a sunburn.

Four hours and 15 minutes is quite a long time. Under such conditions of lengthy
hours spent in the sun, reapplication of sunscreen is essential. While we generally
advise reapplication every two hours, for athletes, the intervals are most likely
shorter. This is due to your level of physical activity in the heat, which can cause
excessive sweating. If you engage in water sports such as swimming, your skin is
constantly wet. Both water and sweat are inclined to dissolve the active agents of
sunscreen, weakening your protection. To ensure you obtain the upmost protection,
treat your skin to a water and sweat-resistant mineral sunscreen. All the while,
form a habit of reapplying your sunscreen as soon as it wears off.

We created three types of UVA/UVB broad spectrum sunscreen
specifically suited for your athletic lifestyle. Delivering your skin a sheer, smooth
texture, each of our athletic sunscreens is lightweight and easy to apply. With a high
SPF and up to 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance , they come in different
forms: SPF 40 Ultra Sports Stick (for on-the-go, precise application), SPF 50+
Mineral Screen Gel (for a sheer-textured, maximum protection) and SPF 40 Quick-
dry body spray (for speedy application and effective full-body protection).

We also care for the safety of athletes with sensitive skin (such as acne and rosacea).
Like all of our products, our athletic sunscreens are non-oily, won’t clog pores, and
are free of fragrance as well as harsh chemical irritants.
