Parabens are synthetic preservative chemicals found in several types of products. They are present in many beauty products including shampoos, lotion, cleansers, soap and sunscreen. When using a product containing parabens, the chemicals are absorbed through the skin.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has expressed concern over the safety of parabens, as some studies suggest the possibility that they impair the body’s endocrine system—the system in charge of producing and regulating hormones. The EWG has included a summary and list of concerns regarding the effect of parabens on human health.
Since 1984, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has maintained approval of the use of parabens in beauty and skincare products so long as the levels do not exceed 25%. However, many cosmetic products include more than one type of paraben in their formula, and the CIR-advised level does not regard overall percentages of combined parabens levels within a particular product.
The four main types of parabens included in most personal care products are: ethylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben. Because of the variation of names, it’s important to pay close attention to the ingredient list on beauty and skincare products.
Parabens attach to estrogen cell-receptors in the body, mimicking this hormone. This is said to cause allergic reactions on the skin, skin irritation, reproductive problems, and toxicity in both the immune and neurological systems. Although significant research has yet to be conducted, the Breast Cancer Fund has also asserted that there may be a link between the types of parabens used in cosmetic products with cancerous tumors—concluding that they may raise the risk of developing breast cancer.
Parabens, an additive in many sunscreen ingredients, is a potential health threat. Developed by scientists and physicians with aspirations towards the betterment of health and safety, MDSolarSciences does not include parabens in any product. We’ve taken the appropriate measures to ensure the freshness and longevity of our products but with an eye toward the welfare of our customers, ensuring our sunscreens adhere to FDA and EWG standards.
