Safe, Alternative Ways to Obtain Vitamin D

Recognized for its positive health effects, vitamin D has a wide range of sources as well as benefits.

It regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in our blood, strengthens our bones by absorbing calcium, and contributes to an overall vigorous immune system. Maintaining a healthy immune system includes an endless list of positive benefits on its own, so we want to be sure our bodies are equipped with a healthy amount of vitamin D.

Two of the several forms of vitamin D are particularly essential to us—vitamin D2 (which comes from plants) and vitamin D3 (from sunlight).

The latter is formulated when our skin is exposed to UVB radiation. We know that exposure to UVB radiation increases our risk of skin cancer and melanoma; however, we now learn that UVB radiation in regard to vitamin D distribution can be of benefit to us. Scientists refer to this conundrum as the “Vitamin D Dilemma.” How can we protect our skin while also nourishing our systems with a substantial amount of vitamin D?

Luckily, we don’t have to choose whether we’re going to sacrifice one aspect of our health to improve or protect another. While continuing to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays by wearing broad spectrum mineral sunscreen, we can also ensure proper levels of vitamin D.

MDSolarSciences is reaching new boundaries to educate us on methods pertaining to a broader spectrum of health benefits. Our Scientific Advisory Committee has provided the following tips on alternative methods for obtaining vitamin D.
